VOTERS in Ryedale will go to the polls to elect their local county councillors and Euro MPs on the same day next year.
With the approval of Parliament, the Government has taken action to make next year’s elections more convenient for English voters and electoral administrators by holding the 2009 local and European polls on the same day.

Elections for North York-
shire County Council and 33 other council areas across the country, were to have been held on May 7 followed by the European elections on June 4.

But following a debate in the House of Lords, Parlia-ment has agreed that voters will only need to visit the polling station once, instead of twice within a four week period. Now both will be held on June 4.

The House of Commons also formally agreed the move which was proposed following a consultation in the Summer.

Local Government Min-ister, John Healey, said: “It will be more efficient for electoral administrators and will mean less costs for the taxpayer as a result.”
