Vision for parish's future

THE newly-published Parish Plan has already caused controversy in some quarters – not least from some members of the Christmas lights committee who took exception to a comment that the festive display had become "too popular" and was "no longer for the village".
There have also been complaints about comments that the Manthorpe Park play area in Roxby Road was “outdated and untidy”.
But steering group chairman Cllr Geoff Acomb has been quick to point out that the plan contains the views of parishioners who responded to last summer’s questionnaire and things may have changed since then.
He said: “The steering group couldn’t edit out any particular comment if we didn’t agree with it because then the plan wouldn’t have been an accurate reflection of what people genuinely felt.
“Every comment made in the questionnaire has been included. Where they didn’t fit under a particular heading they were included at the back of the plan under an ‘other comments’ section.
“On top of that the comments are from a snapshot in time last summer when the questionnaire went out.
“At that time the traffic scheme hadn’t been started in the village, and although it’s still not complete, it has made a difference.
“Another example is the park. It has greatly improved since those comments were made.”
The 16-page questionnaire posed a series of questions with tick boxes for answers, together with the opportunity for additional comments from residents.
The main concerns expressed were traffic problems, the visual appearance of the parish and housing, although the questionnaire also sought views on transport, crime and policing, amenities and facilities, the launch of a parish newsletter, parish/village design, local health provision and Dalby Forest.
The plan proposes a five-year action plan covering all the issues raised and this will be instigated by the parish council, with various partners, such as the national park authority, North Yorkshire County Council, primary care trust, Ryedale Council and local police.
Cllr Peter Mills, vice-chairman of Thornton-le-Dale Parish Council, said: “We have been kept up to date on the progress of the Parish Plan and we have all received copies. We’ve embraced its findings and we’ll be discussing them over the coming months. But there’s a lot of overlap in the report – things it recommends that are already being done or planned to be done.
“However, we as a council need to make sure we mirror the wishes of people in the parish and for this plan to be of any value, they have got to see a change.
“We intend to make sure that happens.”
